Swatching and Blocking 101!
Swatching and blocking, the first and last steps of many knitting projects, have a huge impact on your final knitted piece. In this two-hour class you'll learn how to make gauge swatches for different types of projects. We’ll look at how your gauge swatch guides your decisions on needles, yarn, pattern size selection and more. During the class we'll learn how to block both gauge swatches and completed knits.
You are welcome to bring previously made project gauge swatches with questions regarding those swatches. You're also welcome to bring one completed project. We won’t block those projects during the class, but we'll refer to those as examples as we cover blocking techniques.
Pre-class Homework: Knit (2) 5” x 5” swatches in light colored DK or worsted weight yarn. The first swatch should be in stockinette stitch; knit the front side, purl the back side. The second swatch should be in garter stitch; knit both sides. Bind off the swatches. You may weave in the tails, but it's not required.
Class Materials:
Two completed swatches.
Two double pointed needles or a circular needle in the same size used for swatches.
50 yards of DK or worsted weight yarn in addition to the completed swatches.
2-3’ of embroidery thread or fingering weight yarn in a color that contrasts your swatch yarn.
A 12” ruler. You may bring a tape measure, but a ruler is preferred.
Two hand towels
Removable stitch markers, darning needle and a writing utensil.
Optional: Blocking pins or they will be provided for use during the class
Optional: (1) 12” x 12” blocking mat or one will be provided for use during the class
Yarn requirements:
DK or worsted weight yarn in a light color. You will use less than 100 yards total for this class.
Class prerequisites: This is a beginner friendly class, but it is not a class that teaches you how to knit. You'll need to make two swatches prior to the class. One in stockinette stitch and the other in garter stitch as described above.
