Learn to knit your first pair of socks!

This class will take place over two 2-hour classes. You'll be introduced to sock yarns, sock construction and sock fit all while knitting either a DK-weight sock or a Fingering-weight sock (knitter's choice). Which yarn weight should you choose? Start with a DK weight sock if you have never knit with a fingering or sock weight yarn. For some, but not all, the thinker yarn and needles can be an added challenge. The class pattern covers both yarn weight options. Regardless of your yarn weight choice, purchase light or bright colors, as darker colors are harder to see. Shop yarn recommendations can be found below.

Class Materials: Superwash DK weight OR sock weight yarn in one main color (MC).  You will need up to 350 yards of sock weight yarn or 250 yards of DK weight yarn.

An optional contrast color (CC) for the cuff, heel and toe requires 80 yards of sock weight yarn or 60 yards of DK weight yarn.

Recommended Shop Yarns:

DK/Light Worsted - Berroco Ultra Wool, Madelinetosh Tosh DK, Malabrigo Rios
Sock Weight  - Hedgehog Sock & Twist Sock, West Yorkshire Sock, Lang Jawoll, Boss Kitty – Kitty Glitter, Malabrigo Ultimate Sock, Arne & Carlos Sock Yarn

Pattern: to be provided as a class handout

Class Tools for DK socks: One set of US 3 (3.25 mm) double pointed (DP) needles. In addition, you will use stitch markers, a darning needle and a writing utensil.

If you are familiar with the ‘magic loop’ method of knitting in the round, you have the option of using a 32” long circular needle in size US 3 (3.25mm) instead of the DP needles.

Class Tools for fingering weight socks:

One set of US 1 (2.25 mm) double pointed (DP) needles. In addition, you will use stitch markers, a darning needle and a writing utensil.

If you are familiar with the ‘magic loop’ method of knitting in the round, you have the option of using a 32” long circular needle in size US 1 (2.25 mm) instead of the DP needles.

Class prerequisites: This is a beginner friendly class, but it is not a class that teaches you how to knit.  You must have experience with the knit stitch and purl stitch.
